Le Mortelle is a fantastic winery that was featured in our Winery of the Month series. Just to refresh your memory, it is owned by Antinori family from Florence, who have been in the wine business for 600 years!
Noted for its quality wines and distinctive location near Castiglione della Pescaia, Le Mortelle features a design wine cellar with organic architecture (note the rocks that allow for natural thermoregulation). The whole estate, which includes vineyards, farm and orchards, is managed in a sustainable way, through recycling and by carefully using raw materials.
This is the setting for an exciting activity offered by Le Mortelle (and it is the only winery to do it in the area): you can participate in the Vendemmia (grape harvest) program, which includes
- picking up grapes in the vineyards
- a guided visit to the winery to learn everything about wine making
- a delicious, healthy lunch with wine tasting
- …and more fun things as you can see in these images below!
The initiative is a half-day program that is valid in late August and early September 2014, for a minimum of 10 participants.
If you are traveling in the Maremma in other seasons, you can still enjoy wine tasting and guided tours of the cellars, both at Le Mortelle and in other local wineries.
